Defining automotive batteries

An automotive battery is classified as one of any size or weight where the use is to start or to provide ignition power for a road vehicle engine, or to power the lighting in a road vehicle. Those which are used in tractors also fall into this category.

Those used for other purposes in a vehicle, such as in key fobs, however, do not classify as automotive batteries.

Those used in electric vehicles do not classify as automotive batteries, rather as industrial batteries. Hybrid vehicles typically contain both automotive and industrial batteries.
